Add some texture.

Once the figure is colored, start elaborating the details. To portray a thick skin easily, add some uneven textures like small faint irregular patches. For a skin with a combination of dark brown and green, it is effective to use a darker green or gray color for texturing (any darker tones will do as long as they won’t overpower the main colors). Traditionally, this can be done by dabbing a used cotton (the one you used for smudging, assuming that you have and used one) or a fairly used brush (one which the bristles are already loose). Just make sure that you apply this very gently, faintly and in a very controlled manner.
